EIGHTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS

PARIS, FRANCE
Last year to commemorate the holiday season I made a string of special posts inspired by the Twelve Days of Christmas and this year it is back but the topic is new and I hope just as exciting as the last. This years the countdown will be on Novel Destinations. Stories where the setting was not just a mere back drop but an extra character in the story as well. So enjoy and let the fun begin:)
12 Out of Africa by Karen Blixen
11 Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
10 Quentins by Maeve Binchy
9 The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
8 Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo
The story goes that Notre-Dame had gone into disrepair and Victor Hugo wanted to point out that unfortunate fact by making it one of the main characters if not the main character of the novel. He thought that it was a great treasure to France that was being overlooked. Hugo writes about Notre-Dame in a detailed and loving way. We see France and Notre-Dame through his rose colored glasses and you fall in love with the Cathedral just as much as he loved it which I believe was ultimately his goal.

  1. I love, love, love your picture. Gargoyles are my favorite. My daughter visiting Notre-Dame when she was in France. How I would love to see the gargoyles in person. Thanks for a great post.

Visiting from the hop and wishing you an awesome weekend.

  2. I was lucky enough to go to Paris for my honeymoon and I loved the Notre dame cathedral. It's beautiful beyond words and even the surrounding Notre Dame area is amazing! The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an incredible book. And like Telly mentioned, the gargoyles on the cathedral architecture are stunning. I love gargoyles too!

  4. When he described Paris as it was then (he devotes an entire chapter to it) I was bored beyond belief. But his descriptions of Notre Dame are quite nice and he does have a way with words.

Speaking of gargoyles, wasn't the cartoon "Gargoyles" fantastic?!
